Description

Stocking Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, which was remodeled and partly rebuilt in the early 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure that has been partly rebuilt and clad in brick. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles and has gabled ends with toothed corbelled brick eaves. A very large sandstone chimney stack with set-offs is located on the right gable end, accompanied by a pair of tall star-shafts, while a brick stack is found on the left end.

The farmhouse has a two-room plan, with a kitchen on the right and a parlour on the left, each heated from the gable end stack. There is a lobby entry in front of a central staircase located between the two rooms, and an outshut along with a small later wing is positioned behind the right-hand room. The current structure is likely a remodelling from the early 19th century and may represent a reduction of the original early 17th-century house.

The exterior is two stories with an attic and presents a symmetrical three-window front facing southeast. The 19th-century windows are two and three-light mullion-transom types, featuring horizontal glazing bars set in openings with cambered brick arches. The first-floor windows on the right and left have been replaced in the 20th century, and the attic windows are set in small brick gables. The central doorway has a glazed and panelled door, with a later porch supported by cast-iron posts. At the rear, there is an outshut on the left and a small single-storey wing.

Inside, the right-hand room showcases exposed wall framing at the rear, chamfered intersecting ceiling beams, moulded joists, and a large fireplace with a cambered chamfered bressumer. The left-hand room features two chamfered cross beams with stops. The central straight staircase and entrance lobby are situated between the two rooms, and there are boarded and four-panel doors. The post and bracket of the jettied rear wall is exposed in the rear wing.
