Description
The cow house, located approximately 20 metres southeast of The Maltsters Tap, dates from the 18th century and has a later addition. It is constructed from thinly coursed yellow and grey sandstone rubble, with a weatherboarded timber framed addition and a corrugated iron roof. The building is one storey high with a loft and features two raking eaves dormers at the front, each with boarded doors. There are three boarded doors, with the outer pair having two leaves each, and a small boarded opening in the later addition to the left. At the rear, there are three opposed doors. Inside, the structure has tie-beam trusses with raking struts and single purlins. This cow house is a complete example of a three-door design, where cattle were housed in two rows facing each other. The central door provided access to a feed passage, while the outer doors were used for mucking out. The cow house is part of a complete farmstead group that includes the farmhouse (The Maltsters Tap) and a barn, contributing to its group value.
