Description
The Parish Church in Wheathill, dated 1622 and restored in 1904, replaces a chapel that existed before 1291. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and the additions are made of coursed stone rubble. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and feature projecting verges.
The church has a plan that includes a chancel with a north vestry, a nave with an integral bellcote, and a south porch. The east window of the chancel consists of twin segmental-headed lights with a three-lobed inset in the spandrel. The restored scissor truss is exposed under the gable bargeboards. There is a blocked south doorway with a flat stone slab lintel, and an early 20th-century projecting tiled gabled vestry extension partially obscures the north wall. The nave features a pair of opposing lattice-leaded two-light segmental-headed windows; the north window has been restored, while the south window bears a dated inscription above it. The south doorway has a round-headed arch with an ovolo-moulded chamfer. The early 20th-century south porch has a tiled gabled roof and an arched stone opening. The west window is an early 20th-century lancet.
Above the west gable, there is a bellcote that houses a single bell set in a round-arched opening beneath a coped ashlar canopy roof. Inside, the chancel has a single-bay roof with restored scissor and collar trusses. The pointed chancel arch is in the Early English style and features a string course with a chamfer forming an abacus, which is reputed to incorporate 12th-century material. The nave has a restored three-bay single purlin roof with queen-post trusses. An inscription over the south window reads: "THIS CHURCH WAS BUILTE BY THE RIGHT WORTH. BONHAM NORTON ESQ AN DOM 1622." The church is of special interest due to its date of construction.
