Description

PITCHFORD C.P. PITCHFORD SJ 5204 - 5304 12/140 The stable block - including The Stable Cottage and The Grooms Cottage approx 30 metres to south-west of Pitchford Hall GV II Stable block with dovecote; now including 2 cottages. Mid-to late C18, altered and extended in the early C19, and partly altered in the late C19. Red brick with sandstone dressings; plain tile roofs. U-plan around courtyard with coach house, stable and dovecote to south-east, carriageway at north-east corner and brick wall partly enclosing open end to south. 2 storeys. Dentil brick eaves cornice and stone coped parapeted gable ends; central brick ridge stacks to north and west ranges and integral lateral brick stack to north of north range. North front: 7-window front; 2-light leaded wooden casements. 3 late C19 gables with planked timbers, 2 to right over projection with pair of blocked round arches; large Tudor-arched carriageway off-centre to left with clock above. Inside of courtyard: irregular fenestration; small-paned casements with sandstone lintels and some first-floor glazing bar sashes; boarded and half-glazed doors; pair of large boarded garage doors to north range. South-east block: stable and coach house with dovecote. Mid-to late C18. 3:2:3 bays. Projecting central tower with segmental- headed boarded loft door, 2 ground-floor depressed arches with keystones, impost blocks and pairs of large boarded doors, and dovecote above with pyramidal roof and octagonal wooden cupola with round-arched openings, square base and ogee lead dome; coach house to right with hipped roof, first-floor 2-light wooden casement, boarded door to left with 2-light rectangular overlight and segmental relieving arch, and pair of depressed arches to right with keystones impost blocks, and pairs of large boarded doors; stable to left with central boarded loft door, and 2 ground-floor glazing bar sashes with segmental relieving arches flanking central boarded door with 2-part rectangular overlight and segmental relieving arch. Interior of C18 block contains a forge with a very large bellows and its levered operating mechanism. The stable block forms a close group with Pitchford Hall (qv).
