Description
The forecourt retaining wall adjoining Pitchford Hall to the northeast is a Grade II listed structure built in the 1870s and 1880s, likely designed by George Devey. It is constructed from squared and thinly coursed red sandstone and features a wide concave curve that returns to the south. The wall is approximately 32 meters long and stands 3 to 4 meters high. It has seven large buttresses with chamfered tops and a square end pier on the north side. This wall retains the forecourt above the Row Brook to the east and probably dates from the period when Devey was working on Pitchford Hall, coinciding with the relocation of the main entrance from the south to the north. The wall is visually significant to the setting of the house and is included for its group value.
