Description
Chirkbank Bridge, also known as Bridge Number 21, is a canal bridge built around 1800 as part of William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. The bridge features uncoursed limestone rubble abutments, an ashlar string course, and a parapet. It has a cambered arch with a stone lintel and a projecting keystone, along with cast-iron ribs on the underside. The corners are marked by rectangular piers topped with shallow pyramidal capping. A cast-iron plate displaying the number "21" is located on the east side of the bridge. This section of the Ellesmere Canal was opened in 1801 to connect Chirk with Welsh Frankton.
