Description
Chirk Bridge is a bridge built around 1798 by Thomas Telford, with later repairs and alterations. It is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar and features a single segmental arch, a projecting keystone, and rusticated voussoirs that extend to the soffit. The bridge includes a flat string course, pilasters, a coped parapet, and rectangular corner piers. The construction contract was awarded to John Simpson of Shrewsbury, who was paid £1,093. Minor repairs were made by Thomas Stanton in 1831 and Edward Haycock in 1844. In the 1920s, the bridge was widened using reinforced concrete, but the original masonry was retained on the face. It spans the River Ceiriog.
