Description

A pair of barns, a stable, and an adjoining wall date from the late 18th century and early to mid-19th century, forming an L-shaped arrangement at Berrington Buildings. The structures are built of red brick with grey sandstone hinge blocks, and have plain tile roofs. The original barn is three bays wide, with a two-bay addition set at a right angle. A dentil brick eaves cornice is visible on the stable, along with vents in the brickwork; the barn roof has 20th-century roof-lights. Segmental-headed doors with bullnose reveals are characteristic features. The main barn has a central boarded door, showing evidence of earlier, larger openings suggesting a former threshing floor. Other doors include a boarded version to the south-east, a loft access, and a pair of boarded doors in the north-west gable. The later barn has pairs of opposed doors, a boarded door to the north-east with a circular pitching opening above, and a pitching opening in the north-west gable. The stable adjoins the original barn and has a pair of segmental-headed casements flanking a central boarded door. A blocked loft door is above, with brick steps leading to a boarded loft door in the gable end. A red brick and sandstone wall, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, connects the barn to former stables and a coach house. Inside, the barns have king-post roof trusses and pairs of purlins. Two pieces of belt-driven machinery are present: an “Albion Root-Cutter” by Harrison and Gregor & Co. Ltd. and Banford's Rapid Mill, manufactured by Uttoxeter Engineering.
