Description
This building is a dovecote, originally a summerhouse, located approximately 80 metres southwest of The Isle. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and was altered and heightened in the mid-18th century. The structure is made of red brick with some grey sandstone ashlar dressings and features a pyramidal plain tile roof. It has a square plan with a plinth that has a moulded stone top, chamfered stone quoins on the earlier lower part, and a dentil brick eaves cornice. The top part of the dovecote has a louvred square wooden glover with a pyramidal lead cap and weathervane. There is a boarded door on the southeast side with a rectangular overlight and a gauged-brick head, and a square opening for doves in the later top stage above. On the northwest side, there is a recessed blind or blocked window with a gauged-brick head. The interior is plastered and contains nesting boxes. Although it is likely built as a dovecote, it may have originally served as a summerhouse. The dovecote is situated within the grounds of The Isle.
