Description

This is a barn and part of a former house, now functioning as a barn, located approximately 4 metres southeast of The Maltsters Tap. The structure dates from around 1600 and includes an attached 17th-century barn. It features a weatherboarded timber frame resting on a sandstone rubble plinth, with part of the house rebuilt in coursed yellow sandstone rubble at the front and a plain tile roof.

The barn consists of three bays, with one bay from the old house on the right. The framing includes square panels with long straight tension braces. There is a truncated dressed grey sandstone stack positioned off-centre to the right of the ridge. The barn has a central boarded door and a boarded loft door above, while the part of the old house to the right includes a loft opening and a small ground-floor window, along with a boarded door to the left.

The right-hand end wall, which was formerly an internal wall, features a ground-floor fireplace with chamfered dressed sandstone reveals and a chamfered wooden lintel. Above this, there is a chamfered former ceiling beam with mortices from former joists, and an exposed tie-beam truss with raking struts and lath and plaster infill.

Inside, the barn has tie-beam trusses with raking struts, a collar and tie-beam end truss with queen struts, and single butt purlins with wind braces. The single domestic bay is part of a former two-bay hall range that was once attached to the farmhouse, The Maltsters Tap. One bay of the hall range has been demolished, separating the house and barn.
