Description
The limekilns, located approximately 60 meters north-east of Bridge Farmhouse, are now disused and date back to 1797. They were part of the Hordley to Weston section of the proposed Shrewsbury Branch of the Ellesmere Canal, designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. The structure is built from roughly coursed limestone rubble, which is mainly hidden by an earth mound. It features three segmental-arched openings with red brick and engineering brick heads. Although the canal opened in 1797 and included a wharf, four limekilns, a public house, stables, a clerk's house, and a weighing machine, the project was ultimately abandoned as the canal did not reach Shrewsbury. This section of the canal was disused by 1917, following the bursting of the banks at Dandyford, a few miles north of Westonwharf. Bridge Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
