Description
9, 9A and 9B on Whitburn Street are mid-18th century buildings that have undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of red brick with a plain-tile roof and have lateral and end stacks at the rear. The main block is three stories high and features a two-window range with 19th-century four-pane sash windows set under painted gauged brick flat arches. There is a 20th-century shop front below. The building has brick dentilled eaves and twin gables at the rear, which have two-light casements. A single-storey 19th-century section connects to a two-storey rear wing, which has further single-storey extensions. The rear wing displays pigeon holes and perches on its gable facing the street, indicating that it may have originally served as a stable and loft. Inside, the first floor has cased beams, with one end visible from the outside. There is a winder stair leading from the first to the second floor, 18th-century doors, and the roof, which is only partially visible, shows massive purlins and coupled rafters, with purlin ends visible from outside. The rear of the building has been altered, but some original beams remain.
