Description

The churchyard gates and gate piers, located approximately 20 metres east of the Church of St. Mary, date from the early 18th century, with the gates added around 1934. The gate piers are made of square grey sandstone ashlar, featuring plinths, chamfered rustication, and cyma-recta moulded cornices at the flat tops. The gates are cast iron, designed with dog bars and dog rails, and include a top rail that has remnants of plate lettering. The gates have alternate bars that project above, each topped with urn finials.

On the right-hand pier, there is a cast plate that reads: "THESE GATES/WERE F'RESENTED TO/ MAJOR E.R.T. CORBETT M.B.E./BY MEMBERS OF/THE SHROPSHIRE I: WEST MIDLANDS/ AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY/AS A TOKEN OF THEIR APPRECIATION/OF HIS SERVICES TO/THE SOCIETY/ANNO MDCDXXXIV". The left-hand pier also has a cast plate, which states: "THE MEMBERS AND OFFICERS OF/THE ATCHAM/RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL/PLANTED THE GROUP OF OAK TREES/N.W. CORNER OF PARK TO EXPRESS/THEIR AFFECTION AND GRATITUDE TO/MAJOR E.R.T. CORBETT, M.B.E./THEIR CHAIRMAN FROM/1920 to 1939". The design of the gate piers is similar to two other sets of piers located to the north of Longnor Hall.
