Description

The Castle Hotel is a circa 17th-century timber-frame building, originally stuccoed, and significantly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has a low-pitched Welsh slate roof with gabled ends. The first floor is roughcast. A string course runs at the level of the first-floor window sills, with a bend at the level of the second floor. The building features rusticated quoins and has three storeys with a three-window range. The windows are sashes with glazing bars and keyblocks, with the ground floor sashes having rusticated jambs. A late 18th-century doorcase is located to the right of centre, featuring fluted pilasters, a blind rectangular fanlight, panelled reveals, and a flush-panel door. A 19th-century portico with Doric columns supports an entablature topped with a model of a castle. The building has 19th-century brick ridge chimney stacks.
