Description

Aldenham Park is a late 17th-century classical mansion with an earlier core, situated at the end of a long avenue. The main structure is ashlar, with two storeys and a facade divided into sections of 4, 3, and 4 bays. Large plate windows are a defining feature. The central section was altered in the 19th century, now having round-headed windows and a raised parapet, likely the location of a former portico. The roof is slate. A distinctive pedimented porch is surmounted by rampant lions. The mansion incorporates an earlier Queen Anne house, visible in a side elevation of rough stonework. Two hipped gables feature heavy, modillioned eaves, and mullioned and transomed lattice casements are also present. Aldenham Park was originally the residence of the Acton family, most notably the 1st Lord Acton (1854-1902), a renowned historian and naturalist.
