Description

New Marton Bottom Lock is a lock on the Shropshire Union Canal, specifically on the Llangollen Branch, built around 1801 with some minor later alterations. It was part of the Ellesmere Canal designed by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. The lock features regularly coursed and dressed limestone blocks on its sides and has two sets of gates. This section of the canal was completed around 1801, and the Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813, later becoming part of the Shropshire Union in 1846. The lock was previously listed under the parish of Ellesmere Rural, but that listing was removed on 3 October 2017. This entry underwent a minor amendment on the same date.
