Description

Quatford Castle, built around 1830 by John Smalman for himself and originally named Morf Mount, is a mock fortalice that exemplifies the Oxford Gaol type. Constructed from red sandstone and brick, it stands four storeys high and features embattlements throughout. The facade includes four Gothick glazed windows, and there is a square tower with five stages, machicolations, and arrow slits. The castle is surrounded by curtain walls with corner bastions and earth ramparts, along with castellated outbuildings. Inside, the castle has a characteristic stone tunnel staircase approach, ribbed ceilings, oak doors with applied tracery, and an oak well stair with brass rod balusters.
