Description
The Dodd Memorial, located approximately 5 meters north of the vestry of the Church of St Mary in Hordley, is a chest tomb dating from around 1821. It is made of sandstone and has a rectangular shape that slightly tapers at the ends. The tomb features a moulded capping and plinth supported by carved feet. The top ledger is slightly chamfered and is topped with a scalloped urn finial that has stylised overlapping leaf decoration around the rim.
The memorial includes inscription panels adorned with fluted fans in the spandrels. The south side commemorates John Dodd of Bagley, who died in 1821, while other inscriptions honor various members of the Dodd family on the remaining sides, including the top ledger. The west end of the tomb has a circular recess with fluted fans at the corners and carvings of two hands pointing upwards towards an hour-glass. The memorial was formerly situated within a railed enclosure, of which the stone base still survives.
