Description
The cross at the junction of Church Street and School Road in Ruyton-XI-Towns is a late 19th-century structure made of red sandstone ashlar and painted wrought iron, designed in the Gothic style. It features an octagonal base with four chamfered steps that support a square shaft, which is enhanced by stepped diagonal buttresses. Each face of the shaft has a pierced cusped opening with hollow spandrels and a wrought-iron railing at the bottom, topped by a crenellated cornice. At the top, there is a stepped pyramidal finial adorned with a raised letter "A" (representing Arundel) and a patée fitched cross. A 20th-century inscription plate on the east side indicates that the cross is located on the site of the lock-up of the ancient manor and borough of Ruyton. This cross is included for its group value.
