Description

The Old School, now a house, was built around 1850 by Reverend John Parker. It is a roughly coursed sandstone building with dressed ashlar detailing and a slate roof with stepped coped verges. The building is in the Gothic style. Originally a single-story structure, a first floor was inserted in the late 20th century. The front elevation features a decorated cornice that is partly surviving at the rear. A rectangular, two-light mullion window is positioned to the left, while a three-light mullion window, with a pointed head in the centre, sits beneath a gable with an armorial shield piercing the eaves. A narrow, rectangular window is to the right of a buttress. A gabled porch to the far right has a pointed arch containing the inscription "THAT THE SOUL BE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE IS NOT GOOD / EVEN A CHILD IS KNOWN BY HIS DOINGS WHAT HER HIS WORK BE PURE.” An external stack to the left of centre features a gabled top and an octagonal shaft with moulded capping. The west gable end has an elaborate two-light mullion window with Gothic tracery on the ground floor and a circular window above with blind Gothic tracery. A thin, square turret with a helm roof and carved finial projects from the north side of the gable. A stepped lancet window sits centrally on the east gable, above which is a rectangular, chamfered opening with a late 20th-century casement window inserted. The rear of the property has been considerably altered in the late 20th century with the insertion of large plate glass windows, but retains a similar external stack to the left. The building contributes to the picturesque group of buildings including the Llanyblodwel Post Office.
