Description
This is a group of eight ledger slabs, dated between 1619 and 1754, located immediately east of the Church of St George in Burrington. Made of cast iron, the slabs commemorate the following individuals from north to south: 1. Robert Steward, who died in 1619; 2. Joyce Walker, who died in 1658, featuring a scalloped rim; 3. Maria Hare, who died in 1674, with a moulded rim; 4. Jane and Barbara Knight, who died in 1701 and 1705, both with a moulded rim; 5. Ralph Knight, who died in 1754, with a broad ornate border; 6. Jane Hare, who died in 1678, with a moulded rim; 7. Richard Knight, who died in 1745, with a broad ornate border similar to slab 5; and 8. William Walker, who died in 1676, with a moulded rim. All slabs, except for slab 2, feature coats-of-arms reliefs. It is likely that this distinctive group of early cast iron slabs was produced at the Knight family's iron foundry in Shropshire. There is also a mutilated stone slab situated between slabs 7 and 8, which is not included in this list. These slabs were previously located in the church and were removed during restoration.
