Description
The L-plan range of barns located to the north-east of Knill Farmhouse dates from the 18th century and forms the west and north enclosure of the foldyard. The barn aligned east/west is an earlier structure made of sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof. To the north/south is a later barn, which has been altered and is constructed partly from sandstone rubble and partly from timber framing with weatherboard cladding, topped with a corrugated metal roof.
The earlier barn consists of seven bays and includes two threshing floor entrances, three rows of loop vents, and three rows with six similar vents each on the west gable end. It has inclined strut trusses and two rows of purlins supporting the roof. The later barn has eight bays and features an entrance to the foldyard located two bays to the right (south) of the stone barn, with a floored area to the south of this entrance. Its roof structure is partly supported by inclined struts and partly by king-posts.
