Description

This lodge, located about 300 yards north of Downton Castle, was built around 1861. It features dressed sandstone and brick, with a timber-frame structure and plaster infill. The roof is tiled and has a stone stack. The building is designed in an L-shape, with arms extending to the east and north, and includes a cellar, one storey, and an attic.

The east elevation showcases a gable front with a three-light casement window in the attic and a canted bay window with two forward-facing lights on the ground floor. Above the attic window, there is a brattished cambered collar and a row of three framed quatrefoils. The hipped roof of the bay window is adorned with another row of decorated timber-framed panels. The outer panels feature quatrefoils with spurs, while the inner panels have quadrant curves at each corner. Carved wooden eagles are positioned beneath the eaves brackets, which are supported by slender corner posts with attached twisted shafts. The gable is finished with a finial and pendant.

To the left, there is a porch with a catslide roof. The open south side of the porch has six panels with ogeed cinquefoiled heads and quatrefoil tracery, separated by iron bars topped with fleur-de-lys finials. The entry from the porch leads into the south wall, which has a ledged door. The south elevation includes a timber-framed oriel window supported by a corbel set in a deep sandstone plinth, with gable decoration featuring saltire crosses.

A brick flat-roofed extension from the late 20th century is attached to the west end but is not of special interest. Inside, the lodge has pegged roof trusses with collars supported by angle struts. The cellar contains a bread oven, a copper, and a stone sink. Additionally, there is a parapet attached to the south side that overlooks the Bridge over Stone Brook. Downton Castle is located within the same civil parish.
