Description

This is a curvilinear glasshouse located within the kitchen garden at Downton Castle, dating to circa 1820. It was built for experiments in protected cultivation by Thomas Andrew Knight, the second president of the Royal Horticultural Society of London, and the cast-iron components were produced by Messrs W. and D. Bailey of London. The glasshouse has a cast-iron curved profile, with coped rendered brick rear and end walls and overlapping panes of glass. It is rectangular in plan, featuring a doorway in the left end and a high-level door in the right end.
