Description
The south terrace wall at Downton Castle is a Grade II listed structure built in the late 18th century by Richard Payne Knight. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the wall varies in height up to about 15 feet, depending on the ground level. It features battered sides on the south and an embattled parapet with loopholes in the merlons and ridge coping. The wall stretches approximately 200 yards long and includes a central semi-circular buttressed projection, along with irregularly shaped projections at each end, one of which incorporates a gateway at the western end. Additionally, the wall is punctuated at irregular intervals by square and circular turrets. The south terrace was designed by Payne Knight to enhance the setting of Downton Castle within a landscape that he preferred to remain wild and natural, contrasting with the more refined landscapes favored by Capability Brown.
