Description

The obelisk, erected in 1812, is likely designed by Sir Robert Smirke for the 2nd Lord Somers. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a square panelled base set on a tooled plinth, with a stepped top above a plain band. The shaft tapers to a pyramidal top. Each side of the base has inscribed panels: the north side commemorates the Honourable Edward Cocks, who fell at Burgos, Spain in 1812; the east side honors Lord Chancellor Somers, who died in 1806; and the south side is dedicated to Ensign James Cocks, who died in 1758.
