Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church with a core dating back to the 12th century, which was almost entirely rebuilt and enlarged by P. R. Kempson between 1866 and 1870. It is constructed from coursed and squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. The church features a nave with a bell turret, a north aisle, a south porch, and a chancel with a north vestry.
The nave includes a west rectangular bell turret topped with a short octagonal broach spirelet. On the south front, there are paired trefoil-headed lights to the left and a group of three similar lights to the right of the gabled south porch, which also has a trefoil in a roundel on both returns. The north aisle has three pairs of trefoil-headed lights and the west end contains vestigial remains of a 12th-century semi-circular headed doorway, along with a re-set semi-circular headed light above it.
In the chancel, there are two trefoiled ogee-headed lights on the south side and an east window featuring three trefoiled ogee-headed lights. The interior, dating from the late 19th century, includes a plain chancel arch and a four-bay arcade leading to the north aisle, with stained glass in the north aisle windows made by Powell in 1874. Notable monuments include a wall tablet for Rudhall Booth from 1685, made of painted wood with arms and rustic lettering.
