Description

The Can and Anchor is a former public house, now a house, likely dating from the 17th or early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a rectangular plan, aligned north/south and facing west. The building is constructed of timber-framing and rendered sandstone rubble, with a hipped roof covered in tiles added in the 20th century. A large axial chimney stack is located to the south of a probable through-passage, and a later stack is at the north gable end. The building has a single storey and an attic. The west front features a dormer window with a two-light casement to the left of the stack, a 20th-century window to the left, and two irregularly placed two-light casement windows to the right of a porch containing an inner ledged door. Timber-framing is exposed immediately to the left of the doorway, originally consisting of three square panels from sill to wall-plate, with additional surface timbering further to the left. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest.
