Description
The orangery located about 150 yards northeast of Downton Castle is a mid-19th century structure, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed from a combination of sandstone rubble and sandstone ashlar, topped with a corrugated metal roof. The building has a rectangular plan oriented east to west, featuring a canted projection at the center of the rear elevation. It is a single-storey structure, with the north wall made of rubble, while the south and side walls are designed as a colonnade, creating a loggia with six bays and a central entrance on the south side, along with two bays on each side. The colonnades consist of ashlar columns that have entasis but lack true capitals or bases, resting on a chamfered ashlar base and featuring chamfered timber lintels. The roof is hidden behind an ashlar parapet, which is adorned with ball finials above each column. The orangery is positioned to face the main entrance of Downton Castle.
