Description

SO 33 SW MICHAELCHURCH ESCLEY CP MICHAELCHURCH ESCLEY

4/75 The Lodge and gates attached to south -

GV II

Former lodge, now private house. Late C19, possibly with C17 origins. Finely coursed rubble, timber-frame, slate roof, central stack with 4 clustered diagonally set shafts. Two cell plan with rear lean-to extension of slightly later date. Two storeys, 3 windows. Ground floor elevation is rubble; first floor is close-studded to south entrance side and has curved braces to post gable end, regular multi-paned casements, entrance under V- strutted gabled slate-roofed porch with buttress supporting it to left and C17 style miniature balusters to right. Interior: bread oven; straight stone stair in stone core between 2 fireplaces under inverted V-headed ceiling beams. Gates: consist of 2 pedestrian and one carriage gate with diagonal cantilever strut from curved post, turned finials. The design of the timber-framing of the lodge echoes that of the porch-extension of Michael- church Court (qv), to which it was primarily the lodge. The design could be by G F Bodley who executed remodellings and extensions for Guy Trafford.
