Description
This is a retaining wall built in the late 18th century, located about 75 yards south of Downton Castle. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The wall stands approximately ten feet high and stretches about 300 yards long, featuring pinnacled buttresses with offsets at roughly ten yard intervals along its length. It starts to the north-east of the south terrace wall and follows an arc, with a straight section of 100 yards running south-west at its south-west end. The retaining wall was designed to provide both structural support and aesthetic appeal to the south terrace.
