Description
The bridge, located approximately 300 metres north of Downton Castle, was built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of dressed coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The bridge features a central tall narrow archway with a two-centred head made up of two chamfered orders. On either side of the archway, there are bartizan-style angled projections with embattled parapets that extend from the wall just below the arch and continue to the main parapet coping.
Additionally, there are smaller similarly arched flood outlets and several irregularly sized and spaced slit openings in the bridge walls. The plain parapet has a string course at its base, a ridged coping, and is splayed at the north end. The south ends of the bridge terminate in octagonal piers with pyramidal capping. The eastern parapet curves in a broad north-easterly sweep, while the western parapet curves into the adjacent Lodge. A short wall, about two metres long, is attached at right angles to the outer side of both piers.
This bridge was constructed as part of significant alterations to Downton Castle that took place between 1860 and 1870, which included the creation of a new entrance on the north-west side of the building. The estate was originally accessed from the south, with the driveway crossing the River Teme at Castle Bridge.
