Description

Cafe 89 is a range of dwellings that now serves as an office and cafe. The building dates from the 18th and 19th centuries but likely has a core that originates from the 17th century. It features painted brick and a steep-pitched Welsh slate roof, with two brick ridge stacks and a brick stack at the rear.

The exterior has one and two storeys with a single-window range. There is an early 20th-century tripartite window with 1/1, 2/2, and 1/1 sashes set under a segmental arch, topped by a rendered parapet. A 20th-century six-panel door is accompanied by another tripartite window with plain sashes, both situated under a moulded hood on plain pilasters, which may have an earlier arched hood. To the right, there are three semicircular arches with stucco springers, containing 19th-century plate-glass windows with semicircular heads. Additionally, there is a 19th-century six-panel door in a moulded case with a moulded flat hood on consoles and panelled pilasters.

The building was originally part of a timber-framed range, some of which still survives within the No.1 St John's Street complex. Inside, the first floor features four-panel doors with architraves, a cornice, and a fireplace. The ground floor includes four-panel and plank doors, along with a fire surround. The building is included for its group value.
