Description
The Cotgrave War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920. It is made of Stonecliffe stone and bronze and is located on raised ground in the churchyard extension of the Grade I listed parish church of All Saints, at the corner of Plumtree Road and Scrimshire Lane.
The memorial features a base of three steps topped by a square plinth that supports a cross with an octagonal section. A bronze sword and wreath are mounted on the front face of the tapering shaft of the cross.
On the front face of the square plinth, there are two bronze plaques. The upper plaque has an inscription in raised lettering that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." This plaque lists the names of 12 parishioners and includes the quotation: “BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH AND / I WILL GIVE THEE A CROWN OF LIFE.” Additionally, an inscription on the south face of the plinth commemorates Pte Walter Henstock, who died in the month before the memorial was unveiled. The lower bronze plaque features an inscription in raised lettering that begins with the dates 1939-1945, followed by the names of four parishioners who lost their lives, and concludes with the words: "BE YE ALSO FAITHFUL."
