Description

SK 63 NW GAMSTON HALL FARM COURT (north side)

3/61 Hall Farmhouse

11.8.75 II

Farmhouse. C18 and C19. Coursed hydraulic limestone rubble with red brick patching. C19 slate roof. 2 off-centre red brick ridge stacks. 2 storeys plus garret, 4 bays. Part glazed porch on ashlar coped brick plinth with slate lean-to roof, inner doorway with part glazed door. Either side are single tripartite casements, further left is a single tripartite glazing bar casement. Above are 2 tripartite glazing bar casements and to the right a single small glazing bar casement. Rear rubble wall with arched doorway now blocked with rubble. Interior. Some chamfered beams. Bressumer fireplace flanked by single C18 4 fielded panel cupboards. Walls 18 inches to 2 feet thick. Local tradition says that this was originally the mediaeval chapel of Gamston whose location is now uncertain, however the north-south axis of the farmhouse on an unrestricted site would appear to cast some doubt on this. It is possible that the stone from this chapel was re-used in an earlier building on this site and then subsequently re-used in the present building.
