Description
There are two headstones located approximately 10 metres from the south fence of the churchyard of the Church of St Luke, to the south-west of the south aisle. The headstones date from 1735 and 1737 and are made of slate.
The first headstone is rectangular and features a round-faced winged angel along with raised letters. It commemorates Elizabeth, the wife of William Morely, who died on 20th October 1735 at the age of 40. This headstone is noted as an excellent example of its type.
The second headstone is larger and also rectangular, with a moulded surround. It displays relief winged cherub heads in the corners, as well as bones and a skull in the bottom corners, accompanied by relief foliage decoration. This headstone is dedicated to Mary, the wife of Thomas Stringer, who died in 1737 at the age of 35 years.
