Description

Chailey House is an estate manager's house built in 1876 by John Birch for the Savile family. It is designed in the Gothic revival style and constructed of brick with ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with plain tiles from the 20th century and features both gabled and hipped sections. The building has a chamfered plinth and a moulded, corbelled jetty on the north side, along with elaborate bargeboards that have drop finials and rainwater heads decorated with an owl motif.

The house is two storeys high and has a square plan with three bays. The windows consist of latticed iron casements set within ashlar and moulded brick mullions, transoms, reveals, and hood moulds. On the north front, there is a projecting gabled bay on the left and two smaller gables on the right. The central gabled porch features a brick plinth, two round piers, and a weatherstripped door, flanked by single casements. Above the porch, there are three casements and a gable plaque with an owl.

The east front has three gables, with a setback door to the left and two casements to the right. The rear elevation includes a central door with a datestone inscribed '1876' above it, flanked by two casements on the left and three on the right. Above this, there are five casements, with the central one dating from the 19th century.
