Description

Portland Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse, remodelled in the early 19th century, with a 20th-century addition. It is constructed of rendered brick, with a slate roof that is hipped to the right, and has left gable and single right rendered stacks. A coved wooden cornice runs along the top of the building. The farmhouse has two storeys and three bays. A central, 20th-century render and pantile gabled porch with bargeboard and a wooden door is set within the right wall. To the right of the porch is a single glazing bar sash window, and to the left a similar sash. Above are three similar sashes.

To the right, set back, is a lower two-story wing with two bays, set on a plinth, with a single right gable stack and eaves band. A doorway has a 20th-century door and arched overlight; to the right is a single glazing bar sash window, and a similar sash above. Further two-story wings extend to the rear.

Extending from the porch for 8 metres is a red brick wall with a concrete balustrade, broken by a doorway with a wooden door flanked by single ashlar coped piers. The wall turns at a right angle, becomes plain brick coped, and extends for 55 metres south, 30 metres west, and 55 metres north, forming a quadrangle with the house. The south side features a doorway with a wooden door under a segmental arch.

The east and west sides each have single red brick and pantile gabled pavilions with dentil eaves and imposts and arched entrances. The east pavilion retains remains of a crocketed ashlar finial. The west side features a doorway with a wooden door under a segmental arch flanked by single ashlar coped piers with ashlar finials; there is a further part-blocked opening flanked by similar piers and finials. To the right of the west pavilion is a projecting brick, wood, and glass lean-to greenhouse. A one-and-a-half-story brick and pantile outbuilding has dogtooth eaves and a single glazing bar fixed light on the first floor. Set back is a second outbuilding, and further right is the gable of another outbuilding. The remaining wall is coped with ashlar, and there is a further doorway with a wooden door.
