Description

The range of farm buildings at Portland Farm includes a pigeoncote, stable blocks, and a barn, built in 1804 with later 19th-century alterations. Constructed from red brick with pantile roofs, the buildings are two storeys plus an attic. The central pigeoncote features two bays and is flanked by single-storey, four-bay stable blocks. It has a single external red brick stack on the right and a dentil and raised brick band that forms a pediment at the gable. All buildings have dentil eaves.

The pigeoncote includes a wooden slatted opening with a glazing bar overlight beneath a segmental arch, and a doorway with ashlar hinge blocks and a plank door under a segmental arch to the left. In the stable block to the left, there is a similar opening and doorway, followed by another similar opening and a low opening with a wooden door. The stable block on the right has a similar slatted opening, a doorway with a double 20th-century door and ashlar hinge blocks, and two additional similar slatted openings.

Above the pigeoncote is an arched ashlar panel dated 1804, which has entrances for pigeons and two rows of ashlar perches. The pediment features a round owl opening. To the right of the right stable block is a single-storey, three-bay stable block with raised eaves band and two similar slatted openings, along with a similar doorway. Attached to the right and projecting is a two-storey barn with dogtooth eaves and altered openings. The barn has a heightened two-storey, eight-bay stable block projecting from its right, which includes two ridge stacks, dentil eaves, glazing bar casements, doorways with wooden doors under segmental arches, and a larger doorway with double doors.
