Description

The Old Ship Inn is an inn dating from the late 16th century that was restored to its original form with a rear wing added in 1938. It features a timber frame that is rendered, topped with pantile roofs, and consists of two storeys plus garrets in an L-plan layout. The main east front has a canted corner on the left, flanked by jowled timber posts with strapwork panels, which frame a glazing bar fixed light. To the right, there is a similar glazing bar fixed light, followed by a two-leaf door with a bracketed hood. Beyond this door are three glazing bar lights and another door flanked by two jowled timber posts with strapwork panels.

Above, on the left, there is a gabled oriel window on brackets with seven 20th-century casements, to the right are two glazing bar casements, and beyond that is another gabled oriel window on stepped brackets with ten glazing bar casements. The right gable features a single Yorkshire sash window. The southern rear wing is constructed of coursed squared rubble, timber framing, and rendering with ashlar dressings. It has two storeys and three bays, including two mullioned and seven plain casements, and to the right, there is a moulded ashlar doorway with a hood.

Inside, the inn has five moulded span beams and moulded joists, a section of linenfold panelling with a naturalistic frieze, and three rooms featuring framed oak panelling, moulded span beams, and moulded plaster cornices. The central room contains a 17th-century panelled overmantel with chip-carving and a naturalistic frieze. There are also two unusual 17th-century seven-panelled doors and one 18th-century plank door. A spiral oak staircase with a square newel leads to the upper levels, and the roof structure consists of principal rafters with strutted tenoned purlins.
