Description
No. 21 Market Place is a mid to late 19th century bank designed in the Jacobean style. The building features a carved stone balustraded parapet that includes the word 'Bank', supported by brackets. It stands three storeys tall, constructed of red brick with a distinctive fish-scale roof. The gable ends have stone stacks, and the building is accented with carved stone quoins.
There are four windows on the upper floors, with the outer windows consisting of four lights and the inner ones having six lights. The windows are framed by stone mullions and transoms, and a moulded string runs between the storeys. The ground floor has two windows, each with eight lights. There are also two outer doorways that feature Jacobean carved finials, hoods on brackets, carved spandrels, and a keystone.
This building is part of a group with other structures in the Market Place, specifically Nos. 21 to 27 (odd), which collectively form a notable architectural ensemble alongside Nos. 1 to 7 (odd) Silver Street and No. 10 Silver Street. Nos. 25 and 27 are recognized for their local interest only.
