Description
Thornton House is a house built in 1826, with a later 19th-century addition to the rear. It is constructed of buff brick with painted stucco dressings and features a hipped slate roof with two brick wall stacks. The front of the house is two storeys high and has five bays. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a bordered overlight, flanked by reeded pilasters and sheltered by a porch with an entablature supported by columns. On either side of the entrance are two plain sash windows with splayed rilled lintels, and the first floor has five similar windows.
Inside, the entrance hall features a moulded cornice with leafy panels and a ceiling rose ornament. An archway from the hall leads to the staircase, which is in a semi-circular projection that is obscured externally by the later rear wing. This projection includes a semi-circular headed window with bordered sashes and coloured glass. The staircase has plain balusters, carved tread ends, and a swept handrail, while the stairwell ceiling is adorned with a decorative cornice. Both principal rooms have plain moulded architraves and cornices, as well as arched alcoves on either side of contemporary fireplaces.
