Description
The Grange, a detached house built in 1891 for Dr George Henry Barton, is an example of Queen Anne style architecture. The house is constructed of brick with projecting wooden eaves and a tiled hipped roof. The south front, facing the road, is double-fronted with two two-storey angle bays featuring sash windows and hipped roofs. Centrally, a dormer window is topped by a steep pediment containing plaster decoration including the initials C.H.B. The east front, which serves as the main entrance, has a slightly projecting bay with a stone moulded door surround topped by a broken scroll pediment. Above the door is a large round-headed window with glazing bars, topped with a pediment containing an oeil de beuf. This side also has two two-storey bays of sashes, and an end bay with a broad, segment-headed ground floor window. A canted square bay sits above, supported by brackets, and is roofed with a steep pediment featuring further decoration and the date 1891. The west front, which contains the back entrance, is similar but less elaborate.
