Description
Manor House is a historic building that dates from the mid 12th century, with early 18th-century and 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and limestone ashlar, topped with pantile roofs featuring three tall ashlar gable stacks. The gables are stone-coped with kneelers and moulded ashlar eaves. The house has a double pile plan and includes a low 19th-century extension at the rear.
The front of the house, which is two stories tall and has seven bays, showcases an 18th-century design. It features a central doorway with a broad moulded architrave and a raised keystone, leading to a partially glazed panelled door. On either side of the doorway are three glazing bar sash windows, with six more sash windows above, including a central dummy window over the doorway. All windows are framed with moulded architraves and raised keystones, and there is an additional doorway on the west side with a rusticated architrave and raised keystone.
Inside, there is a mid-12th-century undercroft that has been incorporated into the rear 18th-century range. This undercroft includes a single window to the east in a deeply splayed opening, along with two large recesses in the south wall and one in the north wall, all featuring rough segmental heads. There is also a small rectangular opening in the north wall to the west. A three-flight return staircase from around 1730 boasts splat balusters with knops, a heavy moulded handrail, and plain tread ends. The house contains 19th-century fireplaces.
The grounds include part of a medieval moat, and the Manor House was originally the seat of the Tyrwhitt family before being sold to the Chaplin family in the early 18th century for £20,000.
