Description
Northorpe Old Hall is a small country house that is now a ruin. It dates from the 16th century, with additions and alterations from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The structure features a timber frame with coursed rubble limestone and red brick underbuilding and additions. Although the roof has now been removed, it was originally covered with plain red tiles and had brick gable stacks with cross set shafts. The building has a T-plan layout and consists of two storeys with four bays on the main front. These bays are marked by massive jowled bay posts that were originally set into the ground. Inside, the hall retains remnants of a 17th-century scheme of oak wainscotting, including a moulded beam with a guilloche design along its edge. There are also remains of 17th-century panelled cupboards and a fireplace surround that conceals an earlier fireplace.
