Description
The George Hotel, built in 1780, is a three-storey brick building located on the west side of High Street. It features a parapet and a slate roof, with a stone plinth and bands at the first floor and below the first floor windows. The façade includes a narrow pseudo entablature with triglyphs beneath the parapet and seven windows with glazing bars. The end bays project slightly and have semi-circular arched recesses with tile windows, each consisting of three lights. The central entrance, originally a rusticated stone carriageway, is now filled in and features a semi-elliptical arch topped with a cornice and a keystone dated 1780. Inside, there are fireplaces and "Adam" style decoration on the stairs, along with a circular window with period tracery. The hotel is mentioned in "Nicholas Nickleby" and the cellars may contain remnants of a medieval inn. The George Hotel and the adjacent properties numbered 62 to 70 form a group.
