Description

Hougham Manor House is a country house that dates back to the early 13th century, with additions from the early 15th century, late 16th century, and further alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features coursed and banded limestone and ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings, stone coped gables, and stone ridge stacks on a tiled roof. It consists of parallel ranges, with a 15th-century and later range attached to the east.

The north front has two storeys with a garret, a plinth, and a low moulded parapet. The five-bay facade has quoins and a central 20th-century panelled door with an overlight, which is sheltered by a 19th-century open porch supported by Tuscan columns that hold up a narrow frieze and cornice. Flanking the door are two windows featuring 19th-century timber cross mullions set in earlier moulded stone surrounds, complete with flat lintels and keystones. The first floor has five similar windows.

Inside, the southeastern room contains an early 13th-century triple respond, approximately 5 feet 6 inches in diameter, with a plain chamfered capital and triple corbels above. The western wall of this room is contemporary and features an internally splayed window, along with at least one other contemporary arched opening, which may be the base of a keep tower belonging to the de Bussey family. To the east of the main block is the south wall of a chapel that was licensed in 1405, which contains three large 15th-century perpendicular windows with cusped heads. This site was formerly the Medieval house of the de Bussey family and is surrounded by a moat.
