Description
Toft House is a house dating primarily from the early 19th century, though it incorporates an earlier 18th-century core, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The construction is red brick with slate and pantile roofing, and brick end stacks. The house is arranged around a central staircase plan with rear wings. It is three storeys high, and the main front has a three-window arrangement of 8/8 sash windows, each with a stucco lintel. A moulded stucco doorcase with a hood supported by curved brackets frames a six-panel door. A French window with margin lights and a small attic window are on the left end, while a 6/6 sash window and attic window are on the right end. The rear wings have various sash and casement windows, along with a six-panel door and overlight. Inside, a prominent open well stick baluster staircase rises the full height of the house. There are several early 19th-century fireplaces with cast iron grates. The kitchen has a cast-iron range within a large fireplace incorporating a possible early brick stack. A separate early 18th-century staircase is located in the rear wing, alongside two-panel doors with H and HL hinges. A house is depicted on a map and survey from 1734, showing the site and the approximate orientation of the present rear wings.
