Description
The Old Barn, located at 43 St Mary's Street, is a building from the 17th century featuring a roof made of stone slates. It has a low, three-storey front that is painted, stuccoed, and tiled, with a 19th-century shop front. The left side of the building is two storeys high, showcasing half-timbering and rendering above a coursed rubble ground floor. There is one sash window above small shop windows and a door. The central section is rendered and connects with No 44, which is now occupied as a single unit.
Inside, the barn has been converted into a restaurant and has undergone significant restoration, but it retains a good original trussed rafter roof. No 44 features a smaller gable made of ashlar, dated 1656, and has a two-storey canted bay with five lights and stone mullions. The ground floor is modern with three windows. The exterior includes ashlar and coursed rubble, and the side elevation has a passage that oversails, supported by plain wood brackets and an early stone buttress.
Nos 42 to 44 are part of a group of buildings.
