Description

Otway House is a house dating from approximately 1812, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. Built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, it has a hipped slate roof and brick wall stacks, arranged in a parallel plan. The two-storey, three-bay front features a plinth, wooden dentillated eaves and cornice, and a moulded stone coped parapet. The central bay is slightly projected and contains half-glazed double doors within panelled reveals, a fluted Ionic doorcase, a dentillated flat hood, and is flanked by single canted bay windows with dentillated cornices and flat lead roofs. The first floor has five plain sash windows with flat, splayed rubbed brick arches. Inside, there’s a dogleg staircase with slender turned balusters, a wreathed mahogany handrail, an open carved string, a semi-circular hall arch, an acanthus cornice, and a ceiling rose. A reeded and ribbon cornice is found in the front room.
